Works as: Agent tool, chat

## Overview

Paperclip’s Slack connection supports an experimental chat channel where mentions become tasks and replies return in threads. Its separate MCP agent-tool route has known compatibility limitations.

The two routes use separate connections and credentials. Chat connectors are off by default; bot installation does not verify an agent-tool connection.

## What agents can do with Slack

- Start a task with a channel mention — Mention the configured agent to create a task for a new thread.
- Continue work in the same thread — Replies in the thread continue the existing task.
- Talk to the agent in a direct message — The configured agent can reply in the DM.

## How to connect Slack

1. In Paperclip, open Connectors and select Slack.
2. On the Access step, choose the identity and which agents may use the connection.
3. For the separate experimental chat route, choose Chat with an agent, use Paperclip’s generated Slack app manifest to create and install an app, then paste its Bot User OAuth Token and Signing Secret and choose the responding agent.

## Slack tools for agents

No verified agent-tool list is shown. The documented compatibility gap remains unresolved.

### Connection policies

Discovered actions follow the connection’s policies. Review their permissions and set actions to Ask first or Off as needed. Wait for verified compatibility or contact support before relying on the agent-tool route.

## Slack connector FAQ

### Can I require approval for actions?

Set an action to Ask first to require human approval of each call or Off to prevent calls. Allowed actions run without approval. Read and Write grouping is separate from these settings.

### What can agents reach in Slack?

Chat access depends on Slack channel reach plus the sender’s linked identity and Paperclip company membership. The agent-tool route has known OAuth compatibility limitations.

### What do I need before connecting?

The chat route requires Chat connectors enabled by an administrator, a public HTTPS instance address and permission to install a Slack app. Its setup is separate from the agent-tool route.

Ways to connect

- Use this connection as an agent tool
  - Follow the provider-specific setup in the linked guide. The agent-tool route remains unverified.
- Chat with an agent (Experimental)
  - Let people in Slack start and continue work with one Paperclip agent.
